Government Update on Social Media use - IMPORTANT

14th Jul, 26

Dear Parents, Assalamu Alaikum,

The Government has recently announced that children under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to have accounts on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube and X (formerly Twitter). This is expected to come into effect in early 2027 and aims to better protect children from online harms.

The Government has also made its ban on mobile phones in schools a legal requirement. Alhamdulillah, this has always been the policy at Tawhid Boys School. We have always believed that keeping mobile phones out of school helps pupils stay focused and remain safe. Technology can be a great tool for learning, but it also brings risks. The best protection is for you to know what your child is doing online and to have regular conversations with them.

Over the past year, we have also seen an increase in safeguarding concerns linked to social media, particularly platforms such as TikTok. Increasingly, we are dealing with friendship issues, disagreements and inappropriate content that begin online but affect pupils in school. We ask parents to regularly check what your child is watching, posting and sharing online.

We have also noticed that more pupils are arriving at school tired and struggling to concentrate. While we cannot always know the reason, we are concerned that some children may be using devices late into the night while parents believe they are asleep. Please consider checking devices before bedtime and, where possible, keeping phones and devices out of bedrooms overnight.

There are several free tools available to help parents manage devices and monitor online activity:

  • Google Family Link – Best for entirely free monitoring. It allows parents to track real-time locations, set daily app usage limits and block specific applications.
  • Microsoft Family Safety – Best for families using Windows PCs and Xbox consoles. It provides excellent web filtering and screen time tracking across devices.
  • Apple Screen Time – Built directly into iPhones, iPads and Macs. It allows parents to set downtime schedules and app limits without needing any third-party installations.

You can also use the Internet Matters website for step-by-step guidance and instant help with setting up parental controls on your family’s devices:

Other useful resources for parents and carers include:

If your child uses your phone or tablet, you can lock it to one app at a time. On Android devices this is called Screen Pinning and on iPhones it is called Guided Access. These simple settings can help prevent children from accessing other apps or websites.

We also encourage parents to be aware of AI (Artificial Intelligence). AI chatbots can sound like real people. While they can be helpful for learning, some children are beginning to use them for friendship, advice or emotional support. Please speak to your child about using AI safely and remind them to seek guidance from trusted adults.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in helping to keep our children safe online.

Jazakumullahu Khayran.
