HACKNEY Nominated Best Travel Plan 2006

School Travel Plan Update
> Update: 2nd July 2007

Allhamdoulillah, the targets we set ourselves last March have been met. We have been successful in fulfilling our action points. To remind ourselves Tawhid was one of the first Independent faith schools to have an approved STP in place in March 2006. Hackney nominated our STP for best Travel plan to TfL. Since March 2006 we have actively promoted a range of initiatives. We have continued to provide our Year 6 and 7 with on the road cycle training, taken part in WOW (walk once a week initiative), entered students in a range of competitions, introduced travel in citizenship and other curriculum’s, and promoted healthier life styles throughout the school.

We have had the cycle storage shelter and the ‘Meet & Greet’ shelter works completed. There has been a significant increase in students cycling to school. We now have 12 students cycling to school on a daily basis and the numbers are increasing daily. The cycle shelter is at its capacity and with the two cycle stands outside the school installed earlier, we will need to plan for further cycle storage in our next Review in March 2008. We also have 3 members of staff cycling to school. The Meet & Greet Shelter will allow parents to wait for their children in a dry area. We have also received kind donations from four Shura members who have donated four excellent picnic benches.

Our first STP Review took place in March 2007. Alhamdoulillah, the review has been approved and submitted for a Higher Travel Award to TfL. The new accredited Scheme has been introduce to value Schools promoting sustainable transport and will remain for two years once received.

To Review the STP, an annual whole school staff and pupil survey was carried out in February 2007 to evaluate the school’s progress since the introduction of the travel plan. The results of the survey and the analysis can be found on our website under school travel. The following targets have been met as set for June 2007 in our March 2006 STP:

  • Pupil Cycling to school has increased by 10% and is increasing
  • Staff cycling to school has increased greater than 10%
  • There has been a greater than 5% reduction in staff car usage
  • Pupil travelling to school by car alone has been reduced by 5%

Our STP Review 2007 has been successful in securing funding from TfL to carryout consultation for road safety measures. London Borough of Hackney will be funded to seek more road safety measures outside the school gates. Barriers and widening the pavement on both sides have been planned following a successful consultation in the next few months.

We would like to thank everybody that has taken part to make this a success. In particular, we would like to thank Helen, Amanda & Alix from Hackney STP Advisors who have supported Tawhid throughout the last year without which it would not have been possible. We would also like to thank the School travel group for their continuous hard work and support, pupils, parents and staff for taking part and promoting all STP initiatives.
